Where to Start When You Don't Know Where to Start? Get Moving on the Path to Your Dream Life (...What 78% of People Don't Know!)
78% of People are Unsure Where to Begin
Embarking on the journey towards your dream life - whatever that means for you - can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. With countless possibilities and aspirations, it's no wonder that many find themselves unsure of where to begin.
In a recent quiz, we asked people how clear they are on where to start, and the results shed light on an interesting perspective.
Understanding the Results:
Out of nearly 500 participants who have taken the quiz so far, the vast majority, 78%, scored low in the "Clear on Where to Start?" category.
The finding shows that a significant number of people feel uncertain or lack clarity when it comes to taking the first steps towards what they would consider 'their dream life'.
I've been there myself - I know how that feels - and I'm really excited because I know that I can help by sharing my own experience and knowledge with people.
18% of respondents scored in the medium range, indicating some degree of clarity, while only 4% scored high. Revealing a select few who have a well-defined path and starting point.
You Want to Live Your Dream Life: So Where Do You Start?
1. Take Time to Dream:
This is the place to start. If you don't know what your dreams are, how can you make your dreams come true?!
Sometimes it's the simple things.
When was the last time you allowed yourself to dream? Like, to really dream? To clear away your day-to-day and take time out just for you - with a clear head, open heart and pen and paper. To contemplate questions like "What would I do if I knew I couldn't fail?", "What would I do if I had all the time and money I needed?", "What do I LOVE doing that I'd like to do more of?" and even "What do I want to do much less of?". To imagine what is possible for you to do with your one precious life?
Taking time to practice conscious, unconstrained dreaming - from the heart - is the place to start. Identifying what is truly right for you (...not what others think is right for you!)
It's a practice that can be learned and one that we should all do regularly.
To be clear, it's very different to 'goal setting' and it wasn't taught at school - but it should be.

2. Focus: It's So Powerful:
After opening your heart, dreaming and discovering/creating a long list of potential dreams to chase - taking time to focus on just a few dreams can make everything easier.
Almost as much as not knowing what your dreams are, the overwhelming desire to achieve too many dreams at once can lead to procrastination and paralysis. Having too many possibilities leads people to struggle to determine the initial steps.
I suggest people focus on no more than 3 dreams at a time. Less is even better.
When you're clear on what you want and where you want to go, the next step of knowing where to start and what to do is easy...
3. Take Action: Even Small Steps:
It's crucial to remember that taking any action, even a small one, is better than remaining stagnant. Time and again I've seen that just starting somewhere - anywhere - helps people gain momentum and clarity along the way.
"Action beats in-action"
The best and simplest approach I've seen - that works time and time again - is to take a little time to brainstorm every action. Big and small. List everything you feel you might need to do to achieve your short listed dream(s).
Make a big long list. Take time to do it. And then choose just 7 of the actions on your list and commit to making them happen.
A simple list of your first 7 time-specific actions will serve as a brilliant starting roadmap to your dreams - once you know what they are!
While it might be tempting to rely on 'having a rough idea what they are in your head', there is no substitute for planning and breaking down the path to your dreams into actionable steps. Giving you a tangible path forward.
By setting manageable actions and deadlines - and understanding what support you need - you create a sense of direction and purpose for yourself. A true path forwards - enabling you to move closer to your aspirations.
4. Embrace Progress, Not Perfection:
"Progress, not perfection" is a saying I just love.
We are all works in progress and taking the pressure off ourselves is a great mindset to embrace. Remember that it's okay to make mistakes, learn and pivot along the way.
In fact in many cases, the only way to find the right way forward is through experimentation and learning from our experiences - and I know too well from my own experiences that there are always silver linings and learnings that come from what we might deem as mistakes.
It's all about embracing a growth mindset. Welcoming learning - however it comes - and being happy to make a little progress every day.
5. Get the Right Support - It's Essential:
It really isn't easy to do it alone - and very few of us are fortunate enough to have the right support in our corner. Often well-meaning friends, family and partners do the opposite of truly supporting us.
It's one of the key reasons people get stuck not making progress on their dream life. They don't have people around to bounce off, check-in with or point them in the right direction.
You've probably heard people quote the research, that we become the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with? I find it true over and over as I hear the stories of people I coach.
That's why it's essential to seek support from an experienced mentor or coach - for valuable insights, structure and meaningful guidance - and to be around other like-minded dream chasers regularly.
Chasing your dream life is an exhilarating yet challenging journey. Along the way, you'll encounter obstacles, doubts, and many moments of uncertainty. That's where having the right support around you comes in, like a warm embrace on a chilly night.
When you have the right support, it's like a safety net that catches you when you stumble and lifts you higher when you soar. People who see the magic in your dreams even when you can't fully grasp it yourself. Who cheer you on, offering unwavering belief and encouragement, urging you to keep going when the going gets tough.
Who most of all help guide you on next steps, when you can't see them yourself.
