Between Stimulus & Response: The Space That Can Change Your Life

by Kristina Karlsson

There's a quote I come back to again and again because every single time I hear it, it stops me in my tracks. It's from Viktor Frankl, and it's one of the most powerful reminders I know when life feels busy, emotional or uncertain:

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

I shared this in this recent Monday Motivation episode because I truly believe this one idea can change the way we live our days.

The older I get, the more I realise that life will always bring challenge.

There will always be unexpected news, difficult conversations, plans that fall apart, people who disappoint us, headlines that make our hearts race, and moments when we feel overwhelmed before the day has even really begun.

We can't always control what happens. But we can learn to work with that space between what happens and what we do next.

And that changes everything.

Why the pause matters more than we think

When something triggers us, most of us go straight into reaction mode. We answer too quickly. We speak before we have processed. We spiral into stories. We let frustration, fear or stress lead.

I know this because I have done it too.

But what Viktor Frankl teaches us is that there is a gap between the event and our response. Sometimes it is tiny. Sometimes we miss it altogether. But with practice, we can learn to notice it.

That pause might only be one breath.

It might only be three seconds.

But that pause is where your power lives.

It is where you move from autopilot to awareness. From reacting to choosing. From feeling controlled by life to becoming the designer of your life.

What this looks like in real life

This idea is beautiful in theory, but it matters most in the ordinary moments of everyday life.

It looks like pausing before replying to a message that upsets you.
It looks like taking one breath before speaking in a difficult conversation.
It looks like noticing the rush of frustration before it becomes words you cannot take back.
It looks like meeting disappointment without immediately deciding the whole day is ruined.

This does not mean pretending things do not hurt. It does not mean denying your feelings. It does not mean becoming passive.

It means making space for intention.

And intention is powerful.

Five key insights from this episode

1. You are not your first reaction

What happens to you is not always your choice. But your response can be. That is such an important distinction. We so often identify with our immediate emotional reaction, but that reaction is not the whole story.

2. A pause is not weakness

Many of us have been conditioned to think fast reactions are strong. But often, the strongest thing you can do is pause. A pause shows self-awareness. A pause shows restraint. A pause gives wisdom a chance to speak.

3. Growth happens in ordinary moments

We often think personal growth happens in big breakthroughs, life-changing decisions or dramatic turning points. But often growth happens in the smallest moments. The breath you take before replying. The tone you choose. The thought you decide not to follow.

4. Peace does not have to wait for perfect circumstances

One of the biggest mindset shifts is realising we do not have to wait until life is easier, calmer or more predictable before we decide how we want to show up. We can choose intention even in imperfect circumstances.

5. Your dream life includes challenge

A dream life is not a life without stress, conflict or uncertainty. It is a life where you meet those things differently. It is a life where you respond with awareness, grace and self-leadership.

How to practise this this week

If you want to start applying this straight away, keep it very simple.

This week, notice the moments that trigger you. Not the huge life events necessarily, but the everyday ones.

When something happens, try this:

Pause.
Take one breath.
Name what is happening.
Then choose what happens next.

Even if you only remember once a day, that is a beautiful place to begin.

This is not about perfection. It is about practice.

It is about becoming more conscious, more present and more intentional in the way you move through your life.

A gentle reminder if life feels rushed

I also know this can feel especially hard when you are rushed. When your mind is already full, your nervous system is already stretched, and your days feel too packed, that pause can feel almost impossible.

That is exactly why this work matters.

Because when life feels rushed, we need practices that bring us back to ourselves.

That is also why I created Dream Life Coaching and why I am so passionate about helping people feel less reactive and more intentional in the way they live.

Final thoughts

If this quote speaks to you, I hope you carry it with you this week:

Between stimulus and response there is a space.

That space may be small, but it is powerful.

That space holds your freedom.

That space holds your growth.

That space may just be where your dream life begins.

So this week, notice the space. Honour the pause. Trust your ability to choose again and again.

Progress, not perfection.
