Create a Life You Do Not Need to Escape From

by Kristina Karlsson
There's a quote from Seth Godin that has stayed with me for a long time (which i recently explored in this podcast episode):
"Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don't need to escape from."
The first time I heard it, I stopped. Really stopped.
Because while I love holidays, travel and all the beauty that comes with a break, I also know that most of our lives are not lived on holiday.
They are lived in the ordinary days. The Mondays. The routines. The small moments that often seem insignificant, but actually shape everything.
And that is why this podcast episode felt so important to record.
Why designing your everyday life matters
So many people spend their year counting down to the next holiday, the next long weekend, the next moment when life will finally feel easier. I understand that deeply.
We all need rest. We all need things to look forward to.
But if your whole life feels like something you need to escape from, that is worth paying attention to.
Your dream life is not a far-off fantasy reserved for other people. It is something you begin creating in the life you already have. Not through perfection, but through intention.
To me, a dream life is a life you consciously design. It is a life where your days reflect what matters most to you. A life where you feel more connected, more aligned and more energised by the way you are living.
That does not mean life suddenly becomes easy. We all have responsibilities, hard seasons and things we cannot control.
But even within that, there is often more room to shape our lives than we realise.
Why so many people feel stuck in life
One of the biggest reasons people feel stuck is because they have never really given themselves the space to ask a simple but powerful question: What do I actually want?
So many of us have been taught to follow the expected path.
Be sensible. Stay busy. Do what everyone else is doing. Keep going.
And after years of living this way, it is very easy to lose touch with what actually lights you up.
That is when life can begin to feel heavy. Not because you are doing anything wrong, but because you may be living out of alignment with your own values, desires and dreams.
The good news is that change does not have to be dramatic. You do not need to turn your whole life upside down overnight.
Often, it starts with becoming honest with yourself and making one small shift.
3 ways to create a life you do not need to escape from
In the podcast, I share three simple ways to begin.
1. Get clear on what you truly want
Clarity is where it all starts.
If you are not clear on what matters to you, it is very hard to move towards a life that feels good. So begin with a few honest questions:
What makes me feel most alive? What kind of work lights me up? What do I want more of in my life? What does a really good day look like for me?
Maybe the answer is more freedom. More creativity. More space. More meaningful relationships. More time in nature. More calm.
Your answers do not need to sound impressive. They just need to feel true.
2. Start with small changes
Once you have some clarity, the next step is not to overwhelm yourself. It is to start small.
If you want more creativity, block out half an hour this week to make something. If you want more connection, text the friend you keep thinking about.
If you know your current work is draining you, start exploring what could be next.
Small actions matter more than most people think. They build momentum. And momentum is powerful.
3. Design your days, not just your holidays
This may be the most important shift of all.
Many of us are very good at planning holidays, but not nearly as intentional about planning the way we actually live day to day.
And yet, as Annie Dillard so beautifully said, "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives."
That quote says everything.
If you want a dream life, start with your next day. Your next morning. Your next decision. Ask yourself: How can I make this week feel a little more like the life I want to live?
That might mean saying no to something draining. It might mean beginning your day differently.
It might mean carving out time for something that matters deeply to you.
Five key insights from this episode
Here are the five biggest takeaways I hope you take from this conversation:
Your dream life starts in the ordinary
Not in some perfect future. In the life you are living now.
Feeling stuck is not failure
It is often just a sign that something needs attention.
Clarity changes everything
You cannot create what you have never taken time to define.
Small steps are powerful
Tiny shifts done consistently can change the whole direction of your life.
You deserve a life that feels aligned
Not perfect, but meaningful. Honest. Energising. Yours.
A loving reminder if you feel stuck right now
If you are in a season where you feel stuck, please know you are not alone. So many people in our Dream Life community feel this way at different points in their lives.
Sometimes what we need most is not more pressure. It is more space. More reflection. More support. More courage to admit that the life we are living is no longer the life we want.
That is why I created my workshop, Get Unstuck and Start Creating a Life You Love, and why I continue to share tools and support through Dream Life Coaching.
One small step this week
If I could leave you with one thing, it would be this:
Do not wait for someday.
Your dream life is not created all at once. It is created one decision at a time. One brave moment.
One honest choice.
One small step.
So this week, rather than only dreaming about your next holiday, ask yourself what you can do to make your everyday life feel more like home.
Because you deserve to create a life you do not need to escape from.
