How to Achieve Your Impossible Dreams: The 5-Year Crusade

by Kristina Karlsson
Imagine if the next five years completely changed your life.
That’s the premise of John Soforic’s new book, The Five-Year Crusade: The Easy Way to Achieve Your Impossible Goals - and I’m so excited after this recent episode of my Your Dream Life podcast, because John joined me to talk all about it.
You might know John as the author of one of my all-time favourite books, The Wealthy Gardener. It’s a book that’s had such a deep impact on me personally, and I’ve spoken about it in almost every workshop, book club, and coaching session I’ve ever hosted!
So when I found out he’d written a second book, I couldn’t wait to dive in - and I read it in one sitting.
What I discovered is a grounded, practical guide that doesn’t just inspire, it equips you with a system you can actually follow to transform your life.
And the best part? It’s simple.
Why a 5-Year Crusade?
In our conversation, John explained that the book was born from the thousands of messages he received from readers who were drawn to the idea of a “five-year crusade.”
The concept is simple: what if you gave the next five years of your life your full focus - made a one-time sacrifice - and used that time to build something extraordinary?
It’s not about perfection. It’s about creating clarity, tracking your actions, and committing daily to the vision of the life you want.
"Every day, you're either reinforcing your dreams or your distractions," John said.
And that hit me deeply.
The CRUSADE Framework: 7 Essentials That Will Change Everything
In the book, John lays out a simple yet powerful acronym: CRUSADE.
Here's how it breaks down - and how you can use it in your own life:
🔹 C – Clarity
Get crystal clear on what you want. Clarity is what gives your daily actions meaning. You are what you do repeatedly. Without tracking your progress, it's too easy to lie to yourself and believe you're doing your best.
John shared how he uses a timer and tracking system to log six "impact hours" each day.
When you measure it, you stay honest.
🔹 R – Restore Calmness
In today’s busy world, calm is a superpower. Whether it’s through daily walks, yoga, or simply pausing to breathe - restoring calm brings your mind and body into alignment. It’s where your best ideas live.
As someone who travels weekly, I use flights as sacred space to reset and dream.
That intentional quiet time creates so much clarity.
🔹 U – Unlearn Vices
Your bad habits are stealing from your dreams. Whether it’s alcohol, constant phone checking, or late-night scrolling, these “vices” quietly drain your energy.
John recommends a habit fast - a short period where you intentionally cut out behaviours that no longer serve you.
The goal isn’t perfection. It’s awareness.
🔹 S – Simplify Your Day
More isn’t better. Focus is. Instead of trying to do ten things well, do three things brilliantly. Start each day by identifying your top three priorities - and commit to finishing them.
If you're part of our DL Coaching community, you’ll know how often we return to this idea: Don’t let the urgent override the important.
🔹 A – Act with Intention
Living intentionally means knowing your "why" - and aligning your actions with it. When you start each day with purpose, you move from reactivity to creation.
This is how you go from “busy” to fulfilled.
🔹 D – Discipline
Discipline isn’t punishment. It’s freedom. When you create consistency - whether that’s showing up to write, exercise, eat well, or focus - you create momentum that makes success inevitable.
John shared how he hasn’t skipped his tracking system in years.
That’s the kind of commitment that builds legacy.
🔹 E – Elevate Your Life Through Daily Decisions
Your dream life isn’t made in one big leap. It’s built with small, daily decisions that compound over time.
Every choice is either moving you closer to your dream - or further away.
Knowing that puts the power back in your hands.
5 Big Takeaways You Can Use Today
If you're ready to start your own five-year crusade - or even just refocus for the next five days - here are five key insights I took away from our conversation:
1. Track Everything. You can’t change what you don’t measure. Start logging your time, actions, and progress. Use your Dream Life Journal or any tool that works for you.
2. Small Steps Compound. You don’t need to overhaul your life. Just do the next right thing. Every day.
3. Cut the Noise. Your time and attention are sacred. Protect them fiercely from distraction.
4. Create Systems. Motivation fades. Systems carry you through. Build a daily routine that aligns with your biggest goals.
5. Dream Big - but Act Small. Bold visions are built one quiet action at a time.
