How to Choose Your Dreams for the Year and Make Them Happen

The start of a new year is always buzzing with excitement, hope, and the infamous New Year’s resolutions.

But if you’re anything like me, you’ve noticed how those resolutions often fizzle out as quickly as they start.

That’s why I’m inviting you to try something different this year: focus on dreams, not resolutions.

It's something I explore in this podcast episode here...

Dreams are expansive, energizing, and deeply connected to your values. They light you up in a way that feels meaningful and motivating, unlike resolutions, which can often feel like rigid tasks.

So, let’s dive into how you can set yourself up for a dream-filled year.

Step 1: Reflect and Dream Big

The first step is reflection. Pause and think about what truly matters to you. Here’s how to begin:

Look Back Before Looking Ahead.
Take time to reflect on the past year. What brought you joy? What moments made you proud? Write down 5–10 things you’re grateful for or milestones you achieved.

Tap into Your Heart.
Ask yourself: If I could accomplish just one thing this year, what would it be? What feelings do I want to cultivate more of—freedom, joy, growth, or connection?

Visualize Your Best Year.
Close your eyes and imagine it’s one year from now. You’ve had an incredible year. What does your life look like? How do you feel?

Write down what you see in vivid detail.

Step 2: Choose Your Top 3 Dreams

Now that you’ve reflected, it’s time to choose three dreams for the year. These should feel exciting and achievable.

Consider Life Domains.
Think about different areas of your life—career, health, relationships, hobbies, personal growth—and select dreams that resonate most with you.

Filter with Meaning.
Ask yourself: Does this dream align with my values? Will it bring me joy or move me closer to the life I want?

Visualize Success.
Picture yourself at the end of the year celebrating these dreams. If thinking about them brings a smile to your face, they’re worth pursuing!

Step 3: Break Dreams into Actionable Steps

A dream without a plan is just a wish. So, let’s make a plan:

Start Small.
Break each dream into manageable steps. For example, if your dream is to write a book, start by setting aside 20 minutes a day to brainstorm ideas.

Build Supportive Habits.
Daily habits are the foundation of success. Identify habits that support your dreams and let go of ones that don’t.

Check-In Regularly.
Schedule regular check-ins—weekly, monthly, or quarterly—to track your progress and adjust your plans as needed.

Need Some Inspiration?

Not sure where to start?

Here are a few ideas to spark your imagination:

  • Healthier You: Train for a marathon, prioritize sleep, or quit sugar.
  • Adventures: Plan a trip, start a new hobby, or learn a new skill.
  • Inner Growth: Begin a gratitude journal, meditate daily, or join an inspiring community.
  • Creative Pursuits: Start a passion project or enroll in a course.

The key is to make these dreams uniquely yours. They should feel like whispers of your soul urging you forward.

Make a Commitment to Yourself

This year, commit to choosing three dreams that truly inspire you. Write them down and keep them where you’ll see them every day.

Remember, small, consistent steps lead to extraordinary results.
