Lack of Direction, Not Lack of Time: The Real Reason You’re Stuck

by Kristina Karlsson

We all get the same 24 hours. Oprah does. Your neighbour does. I do. And so do you.

So why does it feel like some people are moving steadily toward their dream life while others are running in circles, barely keeping up?

Here’s the truth: Most of us don’t have a time problem. We have a direction problem.

This week, I want to share a few simple but powerful steps to help you bring more direction, clarity, and alignment into your days - so you can create the life you truly want.

The Quote That Changed Everything

This thought has guided me for years:

“Lack of direction, not lack of time, is the problem. We all have twenty-four hour days.” — Zig Ziglar

When I first heard this, it was like someone had flipped a switch. I realised I wasn’t “too busy” - I was just busy with the wrong things.

Once you decide where you’re heading, your time choices become clearer.

Step 1: Reconnect with What Really Matters

Before you add anything else to your to-do list, take a pause and reflect: What does my dream life look like - just for me?

Not what’s trending on social media. Not what your friends or family are doing. Not what you think you “should” want.

Get honest with yourself.

This is where journaling can be magical. Light a candle, make a cup of tea, and spend 10 minutes writing about the life you want to create.

Step 2: Choose Just One Focus

It’s easy to feel paralysed by having too many goals. That’s why, for this week, I want you to choose just one.

Maybe it’s improving your health. Maybe it’s finishing a creative project. Maybe it’s carving out more time for yourself. Or maybe it’s finally starting that business idea you’ve been dreaming about.

Write it down. Then ask: What’s one small step I can take today to move in that direction?

Don’t overcomplicate it. Remember - progress, not perfection, gets you where you want to go.

Step 3: Protect Your Time Like It Matters

One of the biggest reasons we lose direction is that we give away our time too freely.

If you’ve chosen your focus for the week, treat it like an important appointment. Block time in your calendar - 30 minutes or more - and actually use it for that purpose.

This is how you move from “I’m too busy” to “I’m making intentional progress.”

Step 4: Reflect and Reset Daily

At the end of each day, check in with yourself: Did I move in the direction I wanted today?

If not, ask what got in the way - and course-correct tomorrow.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s staying awake to your choices. Too many of us live on autopilot, reacting to life instead of steering it.

Why This Matters Now

We’re heading into the last quarter of the year, and I know how easy it is to let these months slip by in a blur of busyness.

But you don’t have to.

When you set a clear direction and protect time for what matters, the final stretch of the year can become one of your most fulfilling periods.

So choose. Then take that step.
