Money Was Never the Dream: The Freedom to Choose Was

by Kristina Karlsson
One of the most powerful realisations I've had over the years is this:
"Money was never the dream. The freedom to choose was."
For so many years, I believed that freedom existed somewhere in the future.
At the next income level. The next business milestone. The next financial goal.
But every time I reached one of those goals, another one appeared.
The finish line kept moving. Sound familiar? It's something I talk about in this podcast episode.
Why We Chase Numbers
Many of us have been taught to believe that success looks like a particular number.
A salary. A savings account balance, or a business revenue target.
While financial security is important, I've come to realise that what we often want isn't actually the number itself. We want what we believe the number will give us.
Freedom.
What Freedom Really Looks Like
Freedom isn't just about money - t's about choice. It's choosing how your day begins. It's choosing meaningful work. Choosing relationships that energise you. Choosing how you spend your time and attention.
These choices are available to us more often than we realise.
The Trap of "When"
Many women live with a hidden belief:
"When I earn more, then I'll feel free."
"When I retire, then I'll slow down."
"When I hit my goal, then I'll enjoy life."
The problem is that freedom becomes permanently postponed.
We keep waiting for permission.
Freedom Starts Today
One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that freedom can begin before everything is perfect.
You don't need to wait until all your goals are achieved - you can start making small, powerful choices today.
You can create boundaries.
You can prioritise joy.
You can protect your energy.
You can choose what matters most.
Five Key Lessons From This Episode
1. Money Is a Tool, Not the Dream
Money supports our dreams, but it is rarely the dream itself.
2. Freedom Comes Through Choices
Every intentional choice strengthens your sense of freedom.
3. Success Without Freedom Feels Empty
Achievement alone doesn't guarantee fulfilment.
4. Small Choices Create Big Change
A small decision made consistently can transform your life.
5. You Already Have More Choice Than You Think
Freedom often starts with recognising the choices already available to you.
A Question To Reflect On
If money were not the deciding factor, what would you choose? Don't overthink it.
Listen to your heart. Then ask yourself: What's the smallest version of that choice I can make this week?
Final Thoughts
The women I know who feel most free are not necessarily the wealthiest.
They are the women who choose intentionally. They know what matters. They align their days with their values.
And they refuse to wait for someday.
Remember: Money was never the dream. The freedom to choose was.
And your next choice could be the beginning of something extraordinary.

Dream Big.
