The Art of Being Here: How Presence Transforms Everything

by Kristina Karlsson

There is something I keep coming back to lately, and maybe you need this reminder too. Your dream life is not somewhere else. It is not waiting for you once everything is sorted, calm, clear and perfect. It is here, in the middle of your real life.

And that is why I wanted to talk about presence - the topic of my recent podcast episode here...

So many of us are living slightly ahead of ourselves.

Rushing to 'the next thing', worrying about what hasn't happened yet, replaying what already has, or trying to hold everything together so tightly that we miss the life we're actually in.

I know that feeling. I've felt it too.

But the more I grow, the more I realise this: the goal is not to feel amazing all the time.

The goal is to become more present to our own lives. To be here for the good, the messy, the meaningful and even the hard.

Why Presence Matters More Than Ever

Presence sounds simple, but it's incredibly powerful. It's the practice of coming back to yourself - and to what is real right now.

Life Is Not Meant to Be Linear

One of the biggest shifts for me has been accepting that life is not linear.

There are seasons when everything feels like it is flowing and falling into place. Then there are seasons that feel uncertain, heavy and deeply uncomfortable.

Both are part of life.

The problem is not that life has ups and downs. The problem is when we expect it not to. When we do that, every challenge feels like something has gone wrong. But often, nothing has gone wrong. We are just being asked to live a real human life.

A more present life begins when we stop resisting that truth.

Presence Is Not Pretending Everything Is Fine

I think there is a misunderstanding around mindfulness. Sometimes people think being present means being calm, positive and grateful all the time.

I do not believe that.

Being present is not about pretending you are okay when you are not. It is not about pushing down your fear, grief or frustration. It is not about covering pain with pretty words.

True presence means being honest about what is here. Now.

If you're hurting, you let yourself acknowledge the hurt. If you're overwhelmed, you let yourself notice that too. If the world feels heavy, you do not have to deny it.

That kind of honesty is where self-trust begins.

Simple Practices That Help Me Come Back to Myself

Over the years, I have found a few simple practices that continue to bring me back to the present moment. None of them are fancy, and that is part of their beauty.

1. Journaling for clarity

Journaling is one of the most powerful tools in my life. Not just for planning, but for processing.

Writing helps me untangle thoughts, name emotions and hear my own inner voice more clearly.

2. Meditation for steadiness

Meditation reminds me that I am not my thoughts. I can observe them without being taken over by them. Even a few minutes can change how I feel in my body and mind.

3. Walking in nature for grounding

Nature has an incredible ability to bring us back to what is real. A quiet walk without a phone or podcast can be medicine. I find especially that morning walks and sunset walks help me reconnect with myself.

4. Solitude for self-connection

I deeply value time alone. Time without noise, performance or pressure. Solitude allows me to hear my own thoughts and check in with what I need.

5. Planning and intention for peace

This one surprises people, but planning helps me feel present. When I take time to plan with intention, I feel less chaotic and more anchored. Thoughtful planning can reduce noise and create space.

6. Dreaming big for perspective

Dreaming keeps me connected to possibility. It reminds me that the current moment is not the whole story. Even when I do not know how something will happen, letting myself dream expands me.

7. Daily habits for support

Little things matter more than we think. Water. Sleep. Movement. Rest. Repeating simple habits creates a life that feels better from the inside.

8. Gratitude for perspective

Real gratitude does not ignore pain. It simply helps us notice that even in difficult seasons, there is still something good, beautiful or supportive present too.

Five Key Insights From This Episode

Presence is a practice, not a personality trait

You do not need to be naturally calm to become more present. It is something you return to, repeatedly.

You can feel deeply without being consumed

Mindfulness is not suppression. It is the ability to stay with your experience and move through it with steadiness.

Daily practices change everything

The most powerful tools are often the simplest, repeated consistently over time.

Feeling rushed is one of the biggest barriers to presence

When you always feel behind, you live in the future. Presence begins when you create enough internal and external space to come back to now.

Your dream life is built from the inside out

A beautiful life is not only about goals and plans. It is also about how you feel while you are living it.

How to Stay Present When the World Feels Heavy

I also wanted to say this, because I know many of us feel it. There are times when the world feels overwhelming. The news, uncertainty, grief, pressure, all of it can feel like a lot.

In those moments, presence becomes more than a nice idea. It becomes a way of staying connected to yourself.

You do not have to be okay with what is not okay. But you can learn how to breathe. You can journal. You can go for a walk. You can choose a moment of stillness. You can come back to your values.

That is not weakness. That is wisdom.

Final Thoughts on Living a More Present Life

The art of being here is not about becoming some perfect, peaceful version of yourself. It is about meeting your life as it is, with honesty, courage and compassion.

That is what I believe real dream living looks like.

So if you have been feeling stretched, distracted or behind, maybe this is your reminder to pause and ask:

What would it feel like to be fully present in my life right now?

And if you are ready to go deeper into this work with support, reflection and practical tools, come and explore Dream Life Coaching here

Because your dream life is not only about what you create. It is also about how deeply you are willing to live it.
