Title: The Virtue of Rest: Why Slowing Down Helps You Create a Life You Love

by Kristina Karlsson
As we step into December - this magical, sparkly, sometimes overwhelming time of year - I’ve been reflecting deeply on a quote by Alan Cohen that has stayed with me and was the subject of this recent podcast episode:
“There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither.”
Simple wisdom, and powerful.
If you’re anything like me - and like so many women in our beautiful Dream Life community - you’re probably wonderful at the “work” part of life.
You show up.
You take care of others.
You handle endless lists, responsibilities, and expectations.
You care deeply about doing things well.
And you give so much of yourself to the people and projects you love.
But rest? True, nourishing, guilt-free rest?
That often feels harder.
And yet, as I’ve learned again and again, rest is not a luxury. Rest is the foundation that allows you to build your dream life with clarity, intention, and joy.
Why Rest Matters, Especially Now
December is a powerful month for reflection. It invites us to slow down, look back, and look forward.
But it’s also one of the busiest months of the year - filled with events, social commitments, long to-do lists, and emotional expectations.
This makes rest not only important… but essential.
Rest helps you:
-
Reset your nervous system
-
Re-ignite your creativity
-
Strengthen your patience
-
Increase emotional resilience
-
Reconnect with your dreams
-
Show up as the person you want to be
When you pause - even for a moment - your inner world gets a chance to speak again. And that inner world is where your dream life begins.
Rest Is Not the Opposite of Productivity
We often think:
“I’ll rest when everything is done.”
But everything is never done.
The truth is, rest isn’t a break from being productive.
Rest is what makes meaningful productivity possible.
It’s what helps you make decisions with clarity.
It’s what allows creativity to surface.
It’s what transforms overwhelm into grounded action.
And importantly: Rest brings you back to yourself.
A Gentle Invitation: Where Can You Welcome More Rest This Week?
I want to offer you a simple question to carry with you this week:
“Where could I invite just a little more rest into my life?”
It doesn’t have to be dramatic. In fact, the smallest moments often make the biggest difference.
Maybe your rest looks like:
-
Going to bed 20 minutes earlier
-
Saying no to something that drains you
-
Leaving an evening completely unscheduled
-
Enjoying a walk without your phone
-
Drinking a cup of tea without multitasking
-
Journaling just long enough to hear your own thoughts again
And maybe - because it’s December - it looks like giving yourself permission to let things be good enough rather than perfect.
Progress, not perfection. Always.
Five Ways to Invite More Rest Into Your Dream Life This Season
Here are five gentle, practical ways to honour the “virtue of rest” as we move toward Christmas and the New Year:
1. Set Gentle Boundaries
You do not need to attend every event or say yes to every request.
Choose what supports your wellbeing. Let the rest go with love.
2. Create Small Moments of Stillness
Tiny pockets of stillness can shift everything.
A slow breath. A few minutes of silence. A moment outside.
Stillness doesn’t require hours - just intention.
3. Reflect on Your Year
Your Plan Your Year Journal is a beautiful place to explore:
What did I learn?
What stretched me?
What am I grateful for?
What do I want to carry into the new year?
Rest creates the mental space for gentle reflection.
4. Add Rest to Your Planning
Don’t just plan tasks and goals.
Plan rest.
Plan recovery.
Plan white space.
Honour it like any other commitment.
5. Let Rest Count as Productivity
Because it is.
Rest supports your dreams just as much as action does - sometimes even more.

Your Dreams Need Your Energy - And Your Energy Needs Your Rest
As we move through this month, remember this:
Your dream life is not built only through action.
It’s also built through the moments when you pause, breathe, soften, reflect, and reconnect.
You deserve rest just as much as you deserve your dreams.
Sending you calm, clarity, and spaciousness as you move into this new week - and this beautiful season of reflection.
With love,
💛
