Hi there. Welcome back to another Monday Motivation episode.
Today, we are diving into a powerful quote by Matthew Kelly: "We become the books we read."
If you're a frequent listener, you know I love reading and learning. Books have always been a gateway to knowledge, imagination, and growth for me.
I strongly believe that what we read deeply influences who we become.
So, how can we harness this idea to shape our dream lives?
Let's explore some actionable tips.
Tip number one: Choose your books wisely.
Be intentional about your reading choices. Think about the areas of your life you want to improve. Are you looking to develop better habits, enhance your career, or improve your relationships? Find books that align with your dreams and goals. Create a reading list that reflects the person you want to become.
Tip number two: Create a reading habit.
Incorporate reading into your daily routine. Whether it's 10 minutes in the morning, during your lunch break, or before bed, make it a consistent habit. It's important to schedule it, as we are so connected every moment of our day. I also like to consume audiobooks when I walk, run, travel, and drive. This not only helps you consume more books but also reinforces the idea that personal growth is a daily commitment.
Tip number three: Reflect and apply.
Reading is just the first step. Take time to reflect on what you've learned and how it applies to your life. Keep a journal to jot down key takeaways and action steps. Ask yourself, "How can I implement this idea in my own life?"
Tip number four: Discuss what you read.
Join a book club or start one with friends. Discussing books with others can deepen your understanding and provide new perspectives. It also holds you accountable for finishing books and applying the lessons you learn. If you want, you can join my book club. We read one book a month, meet on Zoom every Monday at 8 PM Australian Eastern Standard Time, and discuss what we plan to implement from the book.
Tip number five: Limit distractions.
Set aside specific times for reading and create an inspiring environment. Put your phone away or on airplane mode, find a quiet spot, and immerse yourself in the book. Deep reading leads to deeper understanding and greater impact. If you don't feel like you have time to read, limit your time on the phone and social media. You’ll find a few minutes each day, and it all adds up.
Tip number six: Re-read your favorites.
Sometimes, reading a book once isn't enough to fully absorb its wisdom. Don't hesitate to revisit your favorites. Each time, you might discover new insights and understand a concept on a deeper level. I have a few books that I re-read every year, and I just love it.
So, there you have it: six tips to help you implement the idea that we become the books we read. By choosing your books wisely, creating a reading habit, reflecting on and discussing what you read, limiting distractions, and re-reading your favorites, you can truly transform your life.
