#463 - Monday Motivation: "Never look back unless you are planning to go that way."

Welcome to another short but empowering episode of Monday Motivation, giving you a dose of inspiration as you head into your week...

Today, we explore Henry David Thoreau’s powerful reminder about regret, reflection and moving forward with intention:

"Never look back unless you are planning to go that way."

Three key takeaways you can expect:

  1. How looking backwards too often can quietly keep you stuck in old patterns and regrets
  2. Why your year so far is valuable information, not evidence of failure
  3. How to reset your focus and intentionally move forward through the next six months of the year

Take this opportunity to learn how to stop replaying the past and start creating momentum again.

...and try my new free Mid-Year Off-Track Check, designed to help you uncover what’s really getting in the way and what your most important next step might be.

If this episode resonates with you, I’d absolutely love for you to join me inside my upcoming live workshop, The 6-Month Reset, where we’ll go even deeper together.

As always, I’d LOVE to hear what resonated most with you - so please share and let’s keep the conversation going in the Dream Life Podcast Facebook Group here.

Have a wonderful week …and remember, it all starts with a dream 💛

Good morning.

I want to start your Monday with eleven words. Slow down with me. Listen properly. And let them do their work.

Henry David Thoreau said this:

"Never look back unless you are planning to go that way."

Hi, I'm Kristina Karlsson. Welcome to Monday Morning Motivation. This is the place where we start the week with one quote, one honest thought, and one small thing you can take into your week.

Today's quote is one that is very matter of fact and so true.  And I want to tell you why it matters - especially right now, in May, at the halfway mark.

Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.

On first read, you might think this is a quote about regret. About not dwelling. About moving on.

It's actually something sharper than that.

Read it again. Slowly. "Never look back - unless you are planning to go that way."

What Thoreau is naming is one of the most expensive habits a lot of us have. Which is - we look back constantly. We replay the first half of the year. We catalogue what we didn't do. We compare where we are now to where we hoped we'd be by now. And every time we look back, we head a little further in that direction. Toward regret. Toward stuck. Toward the version of us that lived the first half of 2026 without the changes we wanted.

We don't realise we're doing it. We think we're being honest with ourselves. But there's a difference between an honest look back - which lasts a few minutes and points us forward - and a habitual one, which lasts months, and quietly walks us back into the life we said we wanted to change.

I'll tell you when I learned this.

Years ago, after a hard period in my life, I spent a lot of time looking backward. I thought I was processing. I thought I was learning. Some of that was true. But most of it wasn't. Most of it was a kind of slow loop where I kept revisiting the things that hadn't worked - and ended up feeling more stuck every time I did it.

if you do this -  when you look back – ask yourself: are you going somewhere with it? Or are you just visiting?"

most of the time the answer would be: visiting. we are looking back without planning to go anywhere new with what we saw. And the more time we spent there, the harder it became to look forward at all.

if this feels true to you –lets statt practising this quote..

Here's how Thoreau's line lands for us, today, in mid-May.

Your year so far - whatever it's been - is information. It's data. It tells you what worked. It tells you what didn't. It tells you which dreams have shifted, which ones still pull at you, and which ones it might be time to release.

Honour that information. Look at it honestly. And then - and this is the whole point of Monday - turn forward.

Because today is getting closer to the mid year point. and Today is the first day of what's left. And what's left is roughly thirty-four weeks. Thirty four Mondays. Two more full quarters before December arrives. That's a lot. That's enough. That's plenty - if you stop looking back, and start choosing forward.

Speaking of choosing forward - I want to invite you to something nexr week.

Next Tuesday night, on the twenty-sixth of May at 7pm Australian Eastern time, I'm running a 60-minute live workshop called The 6-Month Reset.

It's exactly what it sounds like. An honest hour together where we look at why the year hasn't gone the way you wanted - and what to actually do about it. Not in theory. In practice. Starting with one tiny thing you'll take home and use the very next morning.

I'll walk you through the three forces that create real momentum in a woman's life. I'll help you diagnose which one is missing for you right now. And by the end of the hour, you'll have a clear sense of what the next six months could look like if you actually stopped and reset properly.

The link is in the show notes. It's also at yourdreamlifestartshere.com forward slash monthly workshops.

If this Monday quote has stirred something in you - if you're realising you've been looking backward at a year you can't change, instead of forward to a year you still can - this workshop is where you turn that realisation into a plan.

Before I let you go - here's the one thing I want you to take into your week.

When you notice yourself looking back this week - and you will, all of us do - ask yourself "Am I going somewhere with this? Or am I just visiting?"

If you're going somewhere - good. Stay there long enough to learn what you need. Then turn forward.

If you're just visiting - that's the moment to stop. Take a breath. And look in the direction you actually want to be heading.

Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.

Have a beautiful Monday. I'll see you next week.
