A Healthy Person Has a Thousand Wishes: Why Wellbeing Comes First

by Kristina Karlsson

There is a simple proverb that has stayed with me:

‘A healthy person has a thousand wishes. A sick person has only one.’

It is the kind of sentence that makes you pause. When we feel well, our minds are free to wander towards a thousand possibilities. We can dream about our relationships, work, family, creativity, travel, contribution and all the experiences we would love to have.

When our health is struggling, those many wishes can quickly become one: to feel well again. It's something I explored in this recent podcast episode...

This is not a message about fear or perfection. It is a loving reminder that health and energy sit underneath everything else we want to create.

Why Health Is the Foundation of Your Dream Life

We often speak about dream lives in terms of goals and achievements. Yet our ability to pursue those dreams depends so much on how we feel.

Energy helps us think clearly, make decisions, connect with people and enjoy the moments we worked so hard to create. When we are constantly depleted, even beautiful opportunities can feel like another demand.

You cannot build a dream life from a depleted one. Energy is not simply nice to have. It is the engine that helps you create, connect, contribute and enjoy your life.

That does not mean we need perfect routines, perfect health or endless discipline. It means recognising that our wellbeing deserves a meaningful place in our plans.

Five Insights to Help You Protect Your Health and Energy

1. Notice When Your World Has Become Too Narrow

When we feel well, we tend to have perspective. We can imagine the future and think beyond the immediate moment.

When we are exhausted, stressed or unwell, our focus naturally narrows. That is not a personal failure. It may be a signal that our body and mind need attention.

Ask yourself: Has my world started to feel smaller? Am I losing interest in things I normally enjoy? Do I have enough energy for the people and dreams that matter to me?

If the answer is no, respond with care rather than criticism. Seek appropriate professional support when you need it.

2. Stop Treating Wellbeing as the Leftover

Many of us plan work, family responsibilities and appointments first. Health gets whatever time remains.

The difficulty is that there is rarely much left over.

We tell ourselves we will focus on sleep, movement, nourishment or rest after the busy period passes. Then another busy period arrives.

What might change if one wellbeing action went into your calendar first? It could be a morning walk, an earlier bedtime, a health appointment or simply a quiet lunch away from your screen.

3. Remember That Small Actions Count

You do not need to transform your entire life on a Monday morning.

Small actions build trust with yourself. Going to bed 20 minutes earlier may not feel dramatic, but it is a clear message that rest matters. Taking a short walk can create breathing space. Saying no to one unnecessary commitment can return energy to something important.

The most useful action is often not the biggest one. It is the one you can genuinely repeat.

4. Ask the One-Wish Question

Here is the reflection I share in this episode:

If I had only one wish left, what would it be, and am I treating it that way?

For many people, the answer will involve health, family, love or time. Once you know your answer, look at the choices you are making today.

This is not an invitation to judge yourself. It is a way to reconnect your daily life with what you value most.

5. Let Wellbeing Support Your Dreams

Looking after yourself is not a distraction from meaningful work. It supports it.

When you protect your energy, you are creating more capacity for your relationships, ideas and contribution. You are giving yourself a stronger foundation for the life you want to live.

Sometimes the most ambitious decision is to rest. Sometimes the most productive choice is to take a walk. Sometimes moving towards your dream life means booking the appointment you have postponed.

One Gentle Step for This Week

Choose one action that tells your body and mind, ‘My wellbeing matters.’

It might be:

going to bed 20 minutes earlier

          walking outside in the morning

          preparing one nourishing meal

          making a health appointment

declining one commitment that is draining you

          asking for professional support

Keep it small, specific and kind.
