Discovering Your Why: The Secret to a Meaningful Life

by Kristina Karlsson

I wanted to take a moment to dive a little deeper into the quote I shared in this recent Monday Motivation episode - a quote that’s been lingering in my heart for years and continues to guide me in all that I do:

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.” – Unknown

Isn’t that just powerful?

It’s one of those truths that hits you in the heart and makes you pause. I

believe that each and every one of us was born for a reason - and that discovering your why changes everything. It’s the moment you go from simply existing to truly living.

In this blog, I’ll walk you through how I discovered my own why, and I’ll share four practical steps you can take to uncover yours.

Whether you’re feeling a little stuck, disconnected from your purpose, or just in need of a little inspiration - this one’s for you.

My Story: A Sleepless Night That Changed Everything

I’ll never forget the night I began uncovering my why.

I was 22, had just arrived in Australia, and found myself wide awake at 3am - overwhelmed, uncertain, and wondering, “What am I going to do with my life?”

With no clear answers, I grabbed a pen and piece of paper and started writing down my dreams. I didn’t know it then, but that was the beginning of something powerful. In that quiet moment, I was beginning to understand my why: to do something I love every day.

That sense of purpose became the foundation of everything - guiding me through business ventures, personal growth, motherhood, reinventions, and even the hard days.

Why Your "Why" Matters

When you find your why, your whole life starts to shift.

You stop drifting and start designing. You make decisions with more clarity and confidence. You feel more anchored - especially in uncertain times. Your why becomes your compass and your filter. It lights the path to your dream life.

And the best part? It doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. It just has to be yours.

5 Key Insights From This Week’s Podcast

1. Your why already lives within you

You may not see it yet, but it’s there - hidden beneath layers of busyness or doubt. When you create space for stillness and reflection, you’ll start to hear its whispers.

2. Purpose begins with questions, not answers

Asking the right questions is where the magic starts. Try journaling on these:

  • What gives my life meaning?
  • When do I feel most alive?
  • What brings me joy?
  • What would I do if I didn’t need to work for money?

These questions aren’t just inspiring - they’re practical tools for connecting to your truth.

3. Your emotions are breadcrumbs

What lights you up? What breaks your heart? These feelings are clues. They often lead directly to what matters most to you.

4. Write it down - magic happens when pen meets paper

There’s something transformative about journaling. When you give yourself permission to write without judgment or editing, your purpose often reveals itself.

5. Live your purpose in small ways, every day

You don’t need to quit your job or move overseas to live with purpose. Start right where you are. If your purpose involves creativity - create something today. If it’s helping others - perform a small act of kindness. Purpose grows through action, not just thought.

Your Why is Not a Destination - It's a Daily Practice

We often think purpose is something we have to figure out once and for all. But it’s actually something we grow into over time.

Your why can evolve, deepen, and even change - and that’s beautiful.

It's not about having all the answers, but about living into them one step at a time.

A Final Thought for the Week Ahead…

As you move through this week, I want to leave you with the quote one more time:

“The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why.”

You were born for a reason.

And every intentional choice you make brings you closer to discovering and living that reason - beautifully, boldly, and on your terms.

With love and encouragement,

 💛
