Don’t Be Afraid to Give Up the Good to Go for the Great

by Kristina Karlsson
There is a quote I come back to again and again in my own life, especially in moments of transition or quiet discomfort.
It's simple, powerful and deeply honest (and one I explored in this recent podcast episode):
“Don’t be afraid to give up the good to go for the great.”
At first glance, it sounds inspiring. But when you really sit with it, it can also feel confronting. Because the truth is, most of us do not stay stuck in lives that are terrible. We stay stuck in lives that are good.
Good jobs. Good routines. Good relationships. Good lives that feel safe and familiar.
And while there is nothing wrong with good, it can sometimes be the very thing that keeps us from living a life that feels truly aligned.
Why We Stay in the “Good”
Good does not demand much from us. It does not require courage every day. It does not ask us to disappoint anyone or step into the unknown. But over time, good can quietly dim our spark.
I remember the moment I realised my own good was no longer enough. On paper, my life looked fine. But inside, something whispered, there is more. That whisper led to my 3am List, to starting kikki.K, and eventually to creating Dream Life.
None of that would have happened if I had ignored the discomfort and stayed where it felt safe.
Recognising Where You Are Settling
The first step toward great is awareness. Ask yourself honestly:
-
What feels fine but no longer excites me?
-
Where am I choosing comfort over alignment?
-
What dreams have I quietly placed on hold?
These questions are not meant to pressure you. They are meant to reconnect you with yourself.
Defining What “Great” Means to You
Great looks different for everyone. It is not about comparison or perfection. It is about how you feel in your own life.
When you imagine your great life, notice the details. How do you start your mornings. How do you feel in your body. Who are you when you are living that life.
Your dreams are not random. They are signposts.
Small Steps Create Big Change
Choosing great does not require burning everything down. It starts with one small, brave step.
A conversation you have been avoiding.
A boundary you have been meaning to set.
Time blocked for something that matters to you.
In Dream Life Coaching, we always come back to this truth: progress, not perfection, brings dreams to life.
Letting Go With Compassion
Letting go of good is not about rejecting your life or being ungrateful. It is about honouring the part of you that knows you are meant for more.
You are allowed to want more joy, more meaning and more alignment.
And if you feel ready to explore that journey with support, I would love to welcome you into the Dream Life Coaching Program at

Your dream life is not something you earn. It's something you choose, one small step at a time.
