If You’re Worried About the Cost of Going for It, Wait Until You See the Price of Staying Where You Are

by Kristina Karlsson

There is one quote I have been reflecting on deeply lately, and I knew I had to share it with you.

“If you are worried about the cost of going for it, you should see the price of staying exactly where you are.”

I absolutely love this reminder because it shifts the way we think. It was the focus of this recent podcast episode.

So often we focus on the cost of change.

The cost of starting. The cost of investing in ourselves. The cost of saying yes to something new.

But what we rarely stop to think about is the cost of not changing.

The cost of waiting. The cost of drifting. The cost of postponing the life we truly want.

And while those costs are quieter, they are often far more expensive.

Why We Stay Stuck Longer Than We Need To

One thing I have noticed, both in my own life and through years of coaching women, is that we often delay the things that matter most.

Not because we do not care.

But because life gets busy.

We tell ourselves:

“I’ll start when work calms down.” “I’ll focus on myself once everyone else is sorted.” “I’ll begin when I have more time, more money, more certainty.”

But life rarely becomes perfectly convenient.

And the longer we wait, the more we quietly pay.

Sometimes that price looks like exhaustion. Sometimes it looks like regret. Sometimes it simply looks like another year passing without meaningful change.

The Swedish Home That Changed Everything

Many years ago, one of my biggest dreams was to own a home in Sweden.

Not just somewhere to stay while visiting family, but a real home where my children could experience Swedish life and culture deeply.

At the time, it felt like a huge dream.

And because it felt big, I kept thinking I could do it later.

Then one day my dad said something that completely shifted my perspective.

He told me:

“If you’re serious about buying a home in Sweden, do it while the children are little. That’s when it will matter most.”

That conversation changed everything.

Soon after, we bought our Swedish home.

And honestly, it became one of the best decisions of my life.

Not because it was financially perfect.

Not because the timing was ideal.

But because it aligned deeply with what mattered most to us.

That experience taught me something powerful:

Most of us do not move when we feel fully ready.

We move when staying still becomes more painful.

But what if we did not wait for the pain?

What if we chose ourselves, our dreams and our future before things became unbearable?

The Four Hidden Costs of Staying Where You Are

During this episode, I shared four hidden costs I see over and over again.

1. Decision Fatigue

When you do not have clarity, every day becomes exhausting.

You constantly wonder what to focus on, what matters most, and what can wait.

Without direction, even small decisions become draining.

2. Compounding Drift

Drift happens slowly.

Three months might not feel like much.

But six months, twelve months, or several years of drifting away from your dreams creates a quiet ache.

Momentum compounds. But so does inaction.

3. Unspoken Dreams

Every dream you carry but never act on takes up emotional and mental space.

Eventually, those dreams become heavy.

The beautiful thing is that even taking one small step can create enormous relief and energy.

4. Doing Everything Alone

This one is huge.

Most women already know what they need to do.

But knowing and doing are very different things.

Community, accountability and support matter.

There is incredible power in being surrounded by people who are also intentionally creating lives they love.

Does Your Spending Reflect Your Values?

One exercise I absolutely love is reviewing where my money and time actually go.

Not with judgment. Just awareness.

Open your banking app and ask yourself:

  • Does my spending reflect what I truly value?
  • Am I investing in myself at all?

For many women, the answer is confronting.

We spend money supporting everyone else.

The children. The house. The groceries. The responsibilities.

Yet we hesitate to spend money on our growth, health, learning or dreams.

That is not just a money issue.

It is a values alignment issue.

The same applies to time.

If your calendar does not reflect your priorities, something needs to shift.

Because your life is being built every single day through your habits, attention and decisions.

A Mid-Year Reset Can Change Everything

One of my favourite practices every year is doing a mid-year reset.

June is the perfect time to pause and honestly ask:

  • What did I truly want for this year?
  • What has drifted?
  • What would make me genuinely proud by December?
  • What small step can I take this week?

These simple questions create clarity incredibly quickly.

And clarity changes everything.

Not because it makes life perfect.

But because it reconnects you with intention.

You Are Still in the Driver’s Seat

If there is one thing I want you to take away from this episode, it is this:

You are not behind.

You have not missed your chance.

The second half of this year has not been written yet.

You still have time to move toward the life you truly want.

Not through a dramatic overnight reinvention.

But through one honest pause. One written plan. One small step.

That is how dream lives are built.

Quietly. Intentionally. One decision at a time.
