Inside Health: Five Foundations for Lasting Energy in Midlife

by Kristina Karlsson
Health information can feel incredibly noisy. One day we're told to eat more of something, the next day to avoid it. New products, quick fixes and confident opinions appear constantly.
That is why I loved my conversation with nutritionist and author Donna Aston. Donna has spent more than 30 years in health, fitness and nutrition, and her central message is refreshingly grounded: begin with the foundations and understand what is happening inside your body.
Her latest book, Inside Health, moves the conversation beyond the number on the scales. We spoke about balanced meals, strength, sleep, caffeine, habits and the importance of finding advice that fits your individual circumstances.
This conversation is general education, not medical advice. Please consult an appropriately qualified professional before making significant changes, particularly if you have symptoms, a medical condition, take medication or have a history of disordered eating.
What Does ‘Inside Health’ Mean?
Donna uses ‘inside health’ to describe the connected systems beneath visible outcomes. Weight, energy, digestion, sleep and strength do not exist in separate boxes.
The scales may be what first captures our attention, but Donna encourages people to look beyond that single number. How is your energy? Are you sleeping well? Are you preserving strength? Are your everyday habits helping you feel capable and alive?
The goal is not perfection. It is understanding, so that choices feel less like punishment and more like care.
Five Insights from My Conversation with Donna Aston
1. Build the Foundation Before Chasing the Latest Fix
There will always be a new health trend. Some ideas may be useful, but they cannot replace the basics.
Donna’s approach begins with balanced food, movement, strength, sleep and realistic routines. I love this because it is similar to creating a dream life. A beautiful vision matters, but we also need the daily foundations that help us live it.
Before buying another solution, ask: Which basic habit needs my attention?
2. Think in Balanced Meals, Not a Single Hero Nutrient
Protein is having a moment. It appears on labels throughout the supermarket, and while protein is important, Donna reminds us that one nutrient is not the whole meal.
A balanced plate can include an appropriate protein source, varied colourful plant foods and suitable fats, based on your needs and professional advice. Diversity matters too. Rather than looking for a perfect food, think about the range and quality of foods you eat across the week.
The most sustainable approach is rarely an extreme one.
3. Make Strength a Midlife Priority
This was an important reminder for me. I love walking and yoga, particularly because they fit around travel and full days. Yet strength training offers different benefits.
Donna recommends learning good technique and using progressive resistance appropriate to your body. If a gym feels intimidating, a qualified trainer can teach you how to use equipment safely. Home-based programmes may also provide a starting point.
Strength is not only about appearance. It supports function, independence and our ability to keep doing the things we love.
4. Give Your Body Rhythm and Space
Donna spoke about meal timing, sleep, daylight and caffeine as parts of a daily rhythm.
Her morning is simple: get outside, walk the dog and receive natural light. She drinks coffee later. She also encourages people to notice whether constant grazing is habit, true hunger or a response to stress.
I found the habit piece especially useful. If an evening snack is attached to a routine, replace the cue. Make peppermint tea, take a short walk or create another gentle way to close the day.
Rigid rules are not right for everyone. The invitation is to notice patterns and seek personalised guidance when needed.
5. Trust Yourself Enough to Begin
At the end of our conversation, I asked Donna what she would tell her younger self.
Her answer was simple: believe in yourself and trust your instincts.
That stayed with me. We can wait until we feel completely confident, but confidence often grows after we begin. Whether you are learning to strength train, changing a habit or asking for help, every small action becomes evidence that you can care for yourself.
A Practical Place to Start
Choose one foundation to explore this week:
• Add more colour and variety to your meals.
• Book a session with a qualified trainer to learn strength technique.
• Walk outside in the morning.
• Notice when and why you reach for a snack.
• Move your final coffee earlier and observe your sleep.
• Speak with a qualified practitioner about a health concern you have postponed.
Do not attempt everything at once. Select the action that feels both meaningful and realistic.
Health and the Life You Want to Create
For me, health is not about controlling every detail. It is about having the energy to enjoy the people, work and dreams that matter.
Donna’s message is empowering because it brings us back to what we can learn and practise. We may not control everything, but we can become more informed, ask better questions and build supportive routines.
