Life Is Short: How to Start Creating Your Dream Life Now

by Kristina Karlsson
There is one truth I come back to again and again, and every time I do, it wakes me up in the best possible way.
Life is short.
Even if we are blessed with a long life, it is still short when you really stop and think about it.
I recently heard something that has stayed with me ever since: the average human life is around 4,000 weeks. It's something I discussed in this recent podcast here...
"When you hear life measured in weeks instead of years, it lands differently. It feels real. It feels precious."
It reminds us that time is not endless, and that is exactly why it matters so much how we choose to spend it.
Why remembering life is short can change everything
I know this might sound a little confronting at first, but I actually find it deeply inspiring. Because when we remember that life is precious, we stop treating our dreams as something we can always get to later.
So many people are waiting.
Waiting for the perfect time.
Waiting until life feels less busy.
Waiting until they feel more confident.
Waiting until someone gives them permission.
But the truth is, there is no perfect time. There is only now.
And I think one of the greatest regrets many people carry is not the mistakes they made, but the life they never fully gave themselves permission to create.
Not being brave enough to try.
Not trusting themselves enough to begin.
Not listening to the quiet voice inside that kept whispering, there is more for you than this.
My own wake-up moment changed everything
I know this because I have lived it myself.
In my early twenties, I was living in Australia, far away from my family in Sweden, and feeling completely lost. One night around 3am, I woke up and whispered to Paul, “What am I going to do with my life?”
What he said next changed everything.
He told me to grab a pen and paper and write down what my dream life might look like.
That one simple moment became a turning point for me. Because something truly powerful happens when you put your dreams on paper.
You stop carrying them around as vague thoughts and start treating them as something real.
Something worth paying attention to.
Something worth moving toward.
What creating your dream life really means
Creating your dream life does not mean you need to make dramatic changes overnight.
It does not mean quitting your job tomorrow.
It does not mean moving across the world next week.
And it certainly does not mean your life has to look like anyone else’s.
Your dream life is simply a life that you consciously design.
It is a life that feels true to you.
A life where your days reflect what matters most.
A life where there is more joy, more meaning, more connection and more growth.
That will look different for everyone, and that is exactly as it should be.
For you, your dream life might mean finally starting the business you keep thinking about. It might mean prioritising your health.
It might mean writing the book that has been sitting inside you for years. It might mean deeper relationships, more freedom, more adventure, or work that feels genuinely meaningful.
Whatever it is for you, it matters.
The real cost of waiting too long
Every time we tell ourselves, “I will start later,” we gently push our dreams further away.
Weeks become months.
Months become years.
And years become decades.
This is why I believe one of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is not, “Why is my dream life not happening?” but instead:
What is one small step I could take this week?
That question changes everything, because it brings your dreams out of the future and into the present.
One conversation.
One journal entry.
One decision.
One email.
One class.
One walk.
One brave little beginning.
Big dreams are not built in one giant leap. They are built in small, consistent steps.
Five key insights from this episode
1. Time is your most valuable resource
When you start thinking about life as 4,000 weeks, you become much more intentional about how you use your time.
2. Regret usually comes from not trying
Most people do not look back and wish they had been more perfect. They wish they had been more courageous.
3. You do not need to change everything at once
Creating a life you love starts with one small step, not one dramatic overhaul.
4. Your dream life gets to be your version
You do not need to follow someone else’s timeline or definition of success. Your dream is valid because it is yours.
5. Support makes the journey easier
When you are surrounded by the right tools, guidance and community, it becomes so much easier to move from stuck to inspired action.
Start today, not someday
If this episode has stirred something in you, let that be a good thing.
Maybe this is your moment to draw a line in the sand and decide that from today forward, you are no longer going to wait for life to magically calm down before you begin.
Maybe this is your reminder that your dreams are not silly, selfish or unrealistic. They are there for a reason.
They are clues.
They are invitations.
They are whispers from your heart about the life you are here to live.
And no, you do not have to do it all alone.
That is exactly why I created my workshop, Get Unstuck and Start Creating a Life You Love, and why Dream Life Coaching is here to support you.

So let me leave you with this:
You have one life.
One beautiful, precious life.
Do not keep waiting.
Take one small step this week.
Write down your dream.
Say yes to what matters.
And begin.
Your dream life can start today.
